ARTIST STATEMENT

I believe that Photography, in addition to being built with the look, implies an emotional connection,
with the human being, the beauty of a landscape or even with the simplest things.

Living in Buenos Aires and later in Mexico City, much of my photography takes place in the streets,
where the unexpected, the unpredictable, arises. We live in a time when the world is immersed in a
great hurry, and we do not stop to gaze, especially the people that surround us.

Looking through the camera for me is a way to slow down and be present to what´s going on out there.
I work in black and white because somehow everything I see or remember is in color; black and white
allows me to perceive reality in another way.

A significant part of my photos are about people, seeking to capture their essence and reveal their life
stories in a powerful and beautiful way. The looks, hands, expressions, say a lot, reflect the depths of
being; resistance, hope, wisdom, beliefs.

I print my work on paper, so that photographed moment becomes real, and is not only visible in the
digital world.

The cycle is complete when I manage to reach people again to give them a printed copy. That photo
will be our means to stay connected.

LA RESISTENCIA

Everything. Hands that contain everything. Hands whose grooves reflect life, its paths not always easy. They show us work and effort. Determination. Perhaps love when they have given caresses…

(Inés López de Arriaga)

Mexico City 2020, where the unpredictable, the magical happens. To Be attentive, observe carefully… photography gives light and importance to situations or people that go unnoticed in the intense rhythm of the City.

There is Luis, a person with a very difficult life story, but despite it he continues standing, firm, moving forward. Luis sings, smiles. Luis is pure strength.

“Human beings know how to make new paths out of obstacles, because the space of a crack is enough for life to be reborn.” (Book The Resistance by Ernesto Sabato)

MADRES DE CHIAPAS

These mothers with their children belong to the town of San Juan Chamula in the mountains of the Altos de Chiapas, Mexico. The women wear headscarves and a black wool skirt they carded themselves

The community of San Juan Chamula is an indigenous Tzotzil population that is known for its cultural and religious autonomy, and for being an example of syncretism between pre-Hispanic ancestral practices and Christianity. The residents are governed by their own rules and administer justice on their own.

VOLCÁN POPOCATÉPETL

Popocatépetl “Smoking Mountain” is an active volcano located in Mexico.

It has an altitude of 5,400 meters above sea level and is approximately 730,000 years old.

MANOS HUICHOLES  2021

Hands that create

The Huicholes are an ethnic group that lives mostly in the mountains of Nayarit and part of the mountainous areas of northern Jalisco.

They develop crafts that are decorated with small beads (chaquiras) of different colors. It is said that much of the aesthetics of the works are influenced by the visions they have during rituals with peyote (hallucinogenic cactus).

JULIA CHA´NA

How beautiful to witness the depth of a life experience; the depth of the soul; the infinity of the Universe on her face. A look that has seen it all and yet is still innocent. (Inés Lopez Arriaga)

“Cha´Na” in triqui language means “woman”. Julia is the leader of the Triqui community from the state of Oaxaca.  Her face is a symbol of wisdom, experience. She teaches her community to make traditional clothes called “Huipiles” through waist weaving, a legacy for subsequent generations.

CELSO NE´EJ

Celso also belongs to the Triqui community of Oaxaca in Mexico.

Ne´ej in Triqui language means “child”.
