Photo Collage: Mitch Miller

❝ The photo has to move or tough you in some way. Like music,  it has to touch your soul ❞

— Mitch Miller

Mitch Miller is a photographer and psychotherapist from New Jersey. His story as a photographer began when, as a child, he saw Ansel Adam’s “Moonrise over New Mexico” at the Museum of Modern Art in NYC. This world-famous photograph moved him and he “wanted to be able to create and move people as well”.

To realize his vision, Mitch began regularly scouring the internet and social media for new styles, trends and the best and latest editing techniques in photography to be inspired and define his style.

As a result, Mitch Miller, with no background in photography, creates beautiful and only black and white photographs because in his words — “by removing color you bring the photo back to the human element”. He believes that “photography has to excite or tension you in some way. Like music, it has to touch your soul.” But he also believes that contrast also plays a very important role, especially in black and white photography.

Mitch Miller’s technique is unusual. To create his work, Mitch usually starts with a basic image and then combines it with others until he has something interesting and evocative. He then edits the photo through a special app until he feels the photo in some way and that it is complete.

The interesting thing is that Mitch has only been using an Iphone for the last 5 years. This allows him to have a lightweight camera with him 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. In his opinion, camera phones are less intimidating for models when shooting candid work. But oddly enough, the biggest photographic challenge for Mitch was deciding whether to go back to using a camera or to continue using a camera phone.

And finally, a little recommendation from Mitch to aspiring photographers:

❝ Try and create images that can move people. Hopefully, if what you are producing moves you, it will hopefully move others as well ❞
