Photography: Murugi Thande
MURUGI THANDE
Murugi Thande is a Kenyan-American multidisciplinary visual artist, specializing in photography and filmmaking, based in Washington, DC. Thande picked up her first camera at the age of thirteen. Since, she has honed her creative eye at the intersection of documentary, street, and photojournalism, subtly weaving in threads of history, fashion, and culture. Drawn to environmental portraiture, she often approaches strangers and requests to photograph them, simply seeking their trust and full attention for a brief moment. This philosophy, rooted in the concept of “Sonder,”—the realization that each passerby has a life as vivid and complex as their own—infuses her work with a profound sense of humanity.”
Murugi’s images have been exhibited at theDallas Holocaust and Human Rights Museum, Illinois Holocaust Museum, Memphis Museum of Science and History, Museum of Pop Culture in Seattle, Newseum, At Yolk, Studio Gallery DC, and Momo Yakitori.
